Heromask

Heromask is a full-face mask inspired by superheroes like Iron Man, to celebrate the idea that wearing a mask is a selfless and heroic act. Heromask was a Top 5 Finalist in the design competition hosted by TV series NewYorkByDesign .

I conducted 22 interviews, a participant-observation study and a natural language analysis on 2000+ Amazon reviews.

Where do existing masks go wrong? Why is widespread mask adoption so difficult in the West, and what can we learn from Asian mask culture?

Positive Amazon reviews were associated with words like comfortable, fit, easy, and nose.

Negative reviews were associated with words like thin, cotton, fabric. The word "small" was detected about 400 times.

Masks are generally uncomfortable, but people put up with them because wearing a mask is a sacrifice and a communal responsibility.

How might we celebrate the selflessness and heroism of wearing a mask?

I designed Heromask with a hinge mechanism based on James Bruton's Iron Man helmet design.

 
 

The injection molded, clear acrylic visor allows facial expressions to come through.

Heromask features a soft silicone seal around the forehead and jaw, inspired by altitude masks.

Heromask was an exercise in research-led industrial design. It was also an opportunity for me to test how qualitative and quantitative research methods can come together to inform insights and strategy.
